The Bet365 Charlie Hall Meeting – Day One
Friday 1st November 2024
The highlight fixture in Wetherby’s season features two-listed races on the Friday and the £100,000 bet365 Charlie Hall Steeplechase on Saturday.
The Original Extreme Sport!
The first Steeplechase in 1752, is said to have been the result of a wager which culminated in a race of four miles across-country and between church steeple’s, traversing hedges and ditches along the way!
Before the days of motor-transport, aviation and technology, Steeplechasing was the original extreme sport, testing the endurance, agility and courage of both horse and jockey and providing spectators with a thrilling day out.
This autumn, you can still enjoy the sport of Steeplechasing, albeit no longer between church spires! Instead the racing takes place on the hallowed turf of Wetherby Racecourse, Yorkshire’s premier Jump track where the season starts in earnest in November.
This is the North’s opportunity, to see the Big Guns of the Jump Race world, The leading Trainers, the best Horses, the top Jockeys.
We have admission packages and enclosures to suit all budgets, starting from just £6 entry into the Course Enclosure and we pride ourselves on the relaxed, friendly atmosphere that our racedays generate, offering a great day out for the whole family.
Our best admission prices are available when you book online in advance of the raceday, so decide which day you want to attend and click through to our fixtures page via the link below to view details of our packages and pricing.
Friday - Day One
Friday 1st November 2024 features two quality listed races.
Sadly last year Day One of the bet365 Charlie Hall Meeting was abandoned due to the weather.
In 2022 The bet365 Premier Handicap Chase saw the honors go to Into Overdrive, trained by Mark Walford and ridden by Jamie Hamilton.
And jockey Harry Skelton took victory in the Weatherbys nhstallions.co.uk Wensleydale Juvenile Listed Hurdle, with Medyaf.
We have admission packages and enclosures to suit all budgets, starting from just £6 entry into the Course Enclosure and we pride ourselves on the relaxed, friendly atmosphere that our racedays generate, offering a great day out for the whole family.
Saturday - Day Two
Saturday 2nd November 2024 features the £100,000 bet365 Charlie Hall Chase. This is the North’s opportunity to see the Big Guns of the Jump Race world; The leading Trainers, the best Horses, the top Jockeys. The original extreme sport is back!
Saturday will attract a crowd of in excess of 10,000 racegoers and the atmosphere will be buzzing.
The feature race on Saturday is the Grade II £100,000 bet365 Charlie Hall Steeplechase won in 2022 by Bravemansgame trained by Paul Nicholls and ridden by Harry Cobden.
The hugely popular Cue Card won this race in superb style in 2015, and went on to land both the Betfair Chase at Haydock and Kempton’s King George VI on Boxing Day. He unfortunately fell while in contention for the 2016 Gold Cup. Cue Card returned to Wetherby in 2016 but failed to secure the double, being beaten into third place behind the Rebecca Curtis trained Grey Irish Cavalier and 2014 winner Menorah.
The 2017 renewal was won by Bristol De Mai, trained by Nigel Twiston Davies, who now holds the record as the trainer with the most winners of this race and 2018 saw Yorkshire based trainer Brian Ellison win with crowd favourite Definitly Red, ridden by Danny Cook. In what was a thrilling race, Bryony Frost came in second place on Black Corton, an impressive run which nearly saw her unseated on the back straight.
2021 saw Nicky Henderson triumph with Fusil Raffles ridden by Daryl Jacob for owners Mr Simon Munir & Mr Isaac Souede and 2022 saw Paul Nicholls win with Bravemansgame ridden by Harry Cobden for owners John Dance & Bryan Drew.
The 2023 renewal was won by Gentlemans Game, owned by Robcour, trained by M. F. Morris and ridden by Darragh O’Keeffe.
Saturday’s racing also features the bet365 (West Yorkshire) Hurdle, a race which has produced winners who have gone on to greater success at Cheltenham… Inglis Drever, Tidal Bay & Cole Harden amongst them, and the OLBG.com Mares’ Hurdle Race has done the same with Cockney Sparrow, Une Artiste and Aurora D’Estruval
We have admission packages and enclosures to suit all budgets, starting from just £8 entry into the Course Enclosure and we pride ourselves on the relaxed, friendly atmosphere that our racedays generate, offering a great day out for the whole family.

History
Named for renowned Yorkshire Jumps Trainer W.A ‘Charlie’ Hall, Saturday’s bet365 Charlie Hall Steeplechase is a significant early highlight in the National Hunt Calendar, and is widely acknowledged as one of the most important and influential trials for top-quality chasers as they set out on the long roads to the Cheltenham and Grand National Festivals.
The first running of this race (known then as the Charlie Hall Memorial Wetherby Pattern Chase) took place in 1978 and was won by Fighting Fit, although the origins of the Wetherby Pattern Chase actually go back to November 1969.
W.A. ‘Charlie’ Hall was born in 1903, the second of three brothers who were all to become succesful racehorse trainers: Tom and Sam were the other brothers.
Based at Towton, near Tadcaster, Hall’s training career began in the Autumn of 1945, with his first winner being Culworth at Wetherby in November of that year.
MagneticFin gave Hall his first important victory when winning the 1948 Scottish Grand National at Bogside. He established a succesful partnership with owner and breeder, Clifford Nicholson, and he steadily climbed to the top of his profession, finishing at the head of the trainers’ table in 1955/56 with 40 winners, earning £15,573 (Which in today’s money would be worth approximately £285,00.00). His most notable success came in the 1956 Champion Hurdle with Mr Nicholson’s Doorknocker.
In all, Charlie Hall trained 584 winners under National Hunt rules during a 31-year career; he also trained some 100 winners on the flat, most notably Super Nova’s victory in the 1975 Chester Cup. He recorded a remarkable 169 winners at his local course, Wetherby, with his most prolific winner at the course being Clear Cut, who scored ten times.
Charlie Hall retired in 1975, handing over his license to his step-son assistant, Maurice Camacho, who in turn handed over to his daughter Julie Camacho. Charlie Hall passed away two years after his retirement, at the age of 75.
